Raphaelle Peale fue el primer artista americano en especializarse en pinturas de la vida muerta, sentando las bases para artistas posteriores como William Harnett (ver Still Life con el Toledo Blade, Galería 29B). El arreglo sencillo y la descripción realista de las texturas y la luz hacen de esta humilde colección de comida y beber una fiesta para los ojos. Peale inscribió esta pintura al importante coleccionista de Carolina del Sur John A. Alston, “El Patrono de Artistas Americanos Vivos”, y jugadamente incluyó una cáscara de naranja en espiral como una "firma". Peale vino de una familia distinguida de artistas. Su padre, el pintor Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827), estableció la primera galería de arte en los Estados Unidos en 1782 y nombró a varios de sus muchos hijos e hijas para pintores famosos con la esperanza de que persiguieran el arte. Algunos lo hicieron, incluyendo Raphaelle, Rembrandt, Titian, y Angelica Kauffmann Peale.
