Rembrandt era solo venticinque quando gli fu chiesto di dipingere i ritratti dei chirurghi di Amsterdam. Il ritratto fu commissionato per la lezione di anatomia del Dr. Nicolaes Tulp nel gennaio 1632. Rembrandt ha interpretato i chirurghi in azione, e sono tutti guardando cose diverse. Dynamism viene aggiunto alla scena dai grandi contrasti tra luce e buio. In questo ritratto di gruppo, il giovane pittore ha mostrato la sua tecnica leggendaria e il suo grande talento per dipingere ritratti realistici.
