Rembrandt tenía sólo veinticinco años cuando se le pidió que pintara los retratos de los cirujanos de Amsterdam. El retrato fue encargado de la lección de anatomía impartida por el Dr. Nicolaes Tulp en enero de 1632. Rembrandt retrató a los cirujanos en acción, y todos están mirando cosas diferentes. El dinamismo se añade a la escena por los grandes contrastes entre luz y oscuridad. En este retrato de grupo, el joven pintor mostró su técnica legendaria y su gran talento para pintar retratos vivos.
