Questo dipinto è una ‘tronie’, uno studio sull’espressione facciale di un vecchio carattere. La sua somiglianza con i ritratti che Rembrandt dipinse di suo padre, Harmen Gerritsz, portò la gente a credere che questo fosse un altro ritratto di lui. Per molti anni, il dipinto è stato anche attribuito a Rembrandt. Ma il trattamento di conservazione (nel 1999) ha rivelato che era stato fatto da uno dei migliori studenti di Rembrandt, che aveva preso uno dei dipinti del suo insegnante come suo esempio. Questo dipinto è in esposizione temporanea per sostituire l'autoritratto di Rembrandt dal 1669 e il suo 'Ritratto di un uomo anziano' dal 1667. Questi lavori sono attualmente in prestito.
