Occhi splendenti e sopracciglia sollevati, un uomo sta barando i suoi denti storti in una risata abbondante. Questo non è un ritratto, ma uno studio di carattere o ‘tronie’ di un uomo che ride. Rembrandt l'ha dipinto mentre viveva a Leiden e aveva ancora uno stile molto liscio. Quindi è notevole che ha dipinto questa testa con pennellate incredibilmente sciolte – lo stile per cui in seguito è diventato famoso. In alcuni luoghi, Rembrandt graffiato nella vernice bagnata per rivelare la base – un piatto di rame rivestito in foglia d'oro.
