Nel 1630-1640 Rembrandt produsse diverse opere sul tema della Sacra Famiglia. L'immagine di Hermitage è datata e firmata dall'artista ed era ben nota in Europa, dove spesso ne facevano copie. Rembrandt raffigura una scena nella casa del falegname Joseph. Il capo della famiglia è duro al lavoro alla sua panchina. La Vergine Maria apre leggermente la tenda per guardare il volto di suo figlio, il suo volto irradiando la luce dell'amore e della tenerezza. Il calore della casa si sente nel buio brunastro della famiglia pacifica, in cui una chiara luce dorata trafigge, accompagnando i piccoli angeli splendenti.
