El Night Watch, la pintura más famosa del Rijksmuseum, tiene otro título: Militia Company of District II bajo el mando del capitán Frans Banninck Cocq. Una pintura de la milicia es un retrato de grupo de una división de la guardia cívica. Rembrandt representó al grupo de milicianos de una manera inusual. No en una fila o sentado en su banquete anual, sino que grabó un momento: un grupo de milicianos acaban de entrar en acción y están a punto de marcharse.
