Despondently, il suo vecchio capo nelle sue mani, il profeta biblico Jeremia piange sopra il fuoco di Gerusalemme, visibile nella parte sinistra. Il profeta aveva predetto la sua distruzione. Questo è uno dei migliori dipinti che Rembrandt ha fatto poco prima di lasciare la città di Leiden. Con questo tempo stava facendo uso di contrasti chiari e scuri pronunciati per separare elementi significativi da quelli meno importanti, e per aumentare l'impatto drammatico di una scena. Le differenze di finitura sono anche caratteristiche: i dintorni sono resi cursorily, mentre in primo piano Rembrandt ha dedicato molta attenzione alla rappresentazione del tessuto e dei materiali, e la riflessione della luce.
