Intentamente interessato all'espressione dell'emozione umana, Rembrandt spesso si usò come suo modello nei suoi primi anni come maestro indipendente a Leiden. Qui, in un lavoro piccolo e liberamente dipinto, appare nella veste di un soldato, rilassato e coinvolgente lo spettatore con una risata. Per questo sofisticato autoritratto, dipinto a ventuno o ventidue anni, Rembrandt combina uno studio di carattere e emozione (noto in olandese come tronie) con una rara auto-presentazione gioviale. La movimentata e corta spazzolatura in faccia e la brillante manipolazione dello sfondo neutro trasmettono un senso di spontaneità e immediatezza.
