Von den vielen Selbstporträts Rembrandt, die über ein Leben gemalt wurden, ist dies vielleicht die größte, nicht nur für seine poignanen Offenbarungen des Selbst, sondern für seinen sicheren Umgang mit Farbe. Die anfängliche Wirkung auf die Zuschauer ist verblüffend, als ob sie einem schlecht verführerischen Monarchen gegenüberstehen. Das seltsame Kostüm, das er trägt, ist zeitlos.
