Rembrandt riconobbe ben presto le nuove possibilità artistiche inerenti alla tecnica dell'incisione, vale a dire, che poteva lavorare con linee di varia spessore e forza sulla piastra di rame preparata, e che con la concentrazione o la diradamento delle linee, con la ripetizione del morso o con la successiva rielaborazione del piatto con l'ago a secco o il coltello da incisione, il potenziale è stato acquisito per modellare sfumature ricche.
