Forse più di qualsiasi altro artista, durante tutta la sua vita Rembrandt si è osservato e ha accompagnato criticamente il suo viaggio di vita con numerosi autoritratti, sia essi dipinti, disegni o stampe. In questo busto incisione, l'artista di 27 anni è girato a sinistra, con la testa girata a metà profilo. La sua espressione tesa ha formato due profonde scanalature verticali sulla fronte che portano dalla radice del suo naso. Il suo cappello è appollaiato cheekily sui suoi capelli fluenti, e ha un goatee e moustache che lo incastrano la bocca. Indossa una lunga sciarpa intorno al collo, che finisce sulla schiena piegata; ci sono corde che pendono dal suo epaulet sinistro. Qui, Rembrandt ha creato magistralmente con il suo ago incisione l'immagine di un giovane inquisitamente fissando l'osservatore – modellato in luce e ombra. (Sonja Brink)
