Questo ritratto molto probabilmente raffigura l'astatrice di Amsterdam Pieter Haringh, che una volta ha gestito la vendita di un famoso ritratto del maestro rinascimentale italiano Raphael che ha servito Rembrandt come fonte di ispirazione. La sitter può aver usato la lente di ingrandimento in mano per valutare dipinti e altri beni di lusso circolanti sul mercato dell'arte di Amsterdam occupato. Come sua moglie nel ritratto pendente anche in vista qui, la muta indossa una forma di abito fantasia che ha poco a che fare con abbigliamento olandese indossato al momento.
