L'uomo è probabilmente Cornelis van Beresteyn (1586–1638), un ricco burgomaster di Delft. La sua posizione restrittiva e l'espressione sobria contrastano con l'animazione e l'accessibilità che Rembrandt di solito attribuiva ai membri della società di Amsterdam. All'epoca, i ritratti a Delft e nella vicina città di corte dell'Aia erano notevolmente conservativi, aderendo ad una tradizione che tornò ai ritratti reali spagnoli della metà del 1500. Rembrandt è noto per aver dipinto alcuni ritratti nell'Aia nel 1632.
