Hendrickje Stoffels, hija de un soldado, trabajó como ama de llaves de Rembrandt, convirtiéndose finalmente en su esposa y madre de su hija, Cornelia. Aunque no hay retratos formales de Stoffels sobreviven, se cree que ha modelado para una serie de pinturas de Rembrandt, incluyendo esta obra, tal vez pretendida como una imagen genérica de un cortesano. El gesto íntimo de la figura de mantener su manto cerrado con una mano hace eco de las observaciones estrechas que Rembrandt hizo de las mujeres en su casa en muchos dibujos sobrevivientes.
