Hendrickje Stoffels, figlia di un soldato, lavorò come domestica di Rembrandt, alla fine diventando la sua moglie comune e madre della loro figlia, Cornelia. Mentre non sopravvivono ritratti formali di Stoffels, si ritiene che abbia modellato per un certo numero di dipinti di Rembrandt, compreso questo lavoro, forse inteso come un'immagine generica di un cortigiano. Il gesto intimo della figura di tenere la sua veste chiusa con una mano riecheggia le osservazioni ravvicinate di Rembrandt fatte delle donne nella sua famiglia in molti disegni sopravvissuti.
