Questo ritratto animato ha un ciondolo, o la pittura di compagno, che mostra il marito della sitter che sorge da una sedia (1633; Taft Museum, Cincinnati). Se vista insieme, marito e moglie sembrano rispondere a vicenda, rendendo questi tra le composizioni più inventive di Rembrandt dei primi anni 1630. La prima esperienza di Rembrandt come pittore di scene di storia drammatica e il suo studio di espressione e di carattere durante il tempo trascorso a Leiden lo prepararono ad essere il ritrattista più originale e di successo ad Amsterdam, dove arrivò nell'inverno 1631–32.
