Una volta conosciuta come Rembrandt, questa grande tela è stata attribuita anche all'allievo del maestro, Nicolaes Maes (1643–1693), e ad Abraham van Dijck (ca. 1635?–1680?). I due artisti erano strettamente associati a Dordrecht, la città olandese meridionale da cui vennero diversi seguaci di Rembrandt. Qualunque sia la sua autorevolezza, il dipinto deve datare da circa 1655–60. I materiali da cucire e l'atto di ritaglio unghie probabilmente suggeriscono virtù domestiche di un genere spesso associato alla vedovanza. Il trattamento monumentale è inaspettato e sicuramente ispirato da Rembrandt.
