Rembrandt malte dieses Thema mehrmals; drei Beispiele, die man als "Een Christus tonie nae"t leven" bezeichnete ("ein Kopf Christi aus dem Leben gemacht", das heißt, aus einem Modell, das wahrscheinlich im jüdischen Viertel von Amsterdam gefunden wurde), wurden in der 1656 Inventar des Besitzes des Künstlers zitiert. Von den heute bekannten Dutzend Büste-Länge-Portraits Christi wird nur das kleine Panel in Berlin allgemein akzeptiert, aber einige andere sind offensichtlich das Werk der Schüler. Das gegenwärtige Bild, das sowohl bei der Konzeption als auch bei der Ausführung empfindlich ist, muss entweder von Rembrandt oder von einem seiner begabten Anhänger sein. Das Problem, wie es so oft der Fall ist, ist kompliziert durch die Tatsache, dass die Lackoberfläche abgeflacht und schlecht abgetragen wurde.
