Los ojos chispeantes y una cabeza inclinada sugieren la naturaleza inquisitiva y artística de Harriet Cany Peale, la esposa del retratista de Filadelfia Rembrandt Peale. Pintada alrededor del tiempo de su matrimonio, esta imagen transmite el “amor de la pintura y el celo por la mejora” que, en palabras de su marido, unió este par. Harriet tomó clases de arte de Rembrandt, y su propio retrato ideal cuelga a la izquierda.
