Rembrandt dipinse regolarmente autoritratti durante tutta la sua vita. Nei suoi primi anni in particolare, li ha usati come opportunità per sperimentare diverse tecniche di manipolazione della vernice, diversi effetti di illuminazione, costumi e espressioni facciali. In questo esempio, dipinto quando l'artista era di circa 24 anni, l'illuminazione è morbida e il volto è reso misterioso dalle aree di ombra intorno agli occhi e alla bocca. Questa è una delle prime opere di Rembrandt ad essere entrata in Gran Bretagna. Fu acquistato da Carlo I, uno dei più grandi collezionisti d’arte dell’epoca, nel 1633, ma fu venduto dopo l’esecuzione del re.
