Nato a Xiaoshan, provincia del Zhejiang, Ren Xiong visse a Shanghai vendendo dipinti per guadagnarsi da vivere. Imitò per la prima volta le opere di maestri di calligrafia passati e vide in seguito numerose opere di calligrafia e dipinti di artisti prestigiosi quando visitava la residenza di Yao Xie (1805-1864) a Ningbo. Con questa esperienza, divenne sempre più abile nella pittura. Eccellente nella pittura a mano libera e meticolosa, dipinse una vasta gamma di soggetti, in particolare figure e storie daoiste. Imitò i dipinti di Chen Hongshou (1598-1652), un noto pittore della tarda dinastia Ming (1368-1644). Ren.
