Tout au long de sa carrière, Ren explore les qualités expressives de diverses manières de brosser. Dans les années 1880, il s'intéressait particulièrement aux effets du lavage coloré et du brossage impressionniste, et créait des images telles que cet éventail légèrement brossé. Le thème Chan (Zen) de l'élevage de la nature vers l'illumination, comme un berger guide son buffle de chemin, dérive d'illustrations de la dynastie Song.
