Il detentore olandese, il principe Willem III di Orange, sposò Mary Stuart, la figlia maggiore del re Giacomo II d'Inghilterra. Nel 1689 furono incoronati re e regina d'Inghilterra. Dieci anni dopo, Blommendael ha scolpito questo ritratto del re-stadholder. Willem III è rappresentato come un potente monarca, con un mantello ermino e la catena dell'Ordine del Garter. Nell'ultima moda, indossa una parrucca di allonge, che Blommendael ha portato alla vita perforando buchi nel marmo.
