Dipinto nel 1861, l'immagine è un potente indictment della schiavitù negli Stati Uniti in quel momento. Mostra due schiavi che sono fuggiti nel deserto solo per essere cacciati da un branco di cani selvaggi, da cui il marito difende eroicamente la sua moglie terrorizzata. L'immagine risale allo stesso anno dello scoppio della guerra civile americana. Una conseguenza della guerra per la Gran Bretagna fu che impedì l'esportazione di cotone grezzo da piantagioni americani, causando una " carestia di cotone" e portando a disagi nelle città mulini di Lancashire.
