Diez, studente di Schönberg, scrisse in una lettera che questo fu uno dei due ritratti che Gerstl dipinse di lui nel 1906, quasi certamente dopo che Diez era tornato quell'autunno da una collocazione estiva a Roma . Diez sostiene che il ritratto era originariamente destinato ad essere una commissione, organizzata da Schönberg, che a quanto pare aveva deciso di aiutare Gerstl ad ottenere lavoro tra il suo cerchio. Diez ricorda che il lavoro è stato dipinto in uno studio temporaneo, la cui descrizione corrisponde ad uno sopra il Café Sperl a Gumpendorferstraße 11, Vienna VI che potrebbe essere stato quello che Gerstl occupava all'epoca.
