Eines der einflussreichsten britischen Künstler des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts, Richard Hamiltons vielfältige Arbeit umfasst sowohl wegweisende Pop-Art-Collagen als auch hochpolitische Themen. Dieses Porträt von Hugh Gaitskell (1906–63) ist eines seiner bekannten satirischen Werke. Gaitskell war sieben Jahre im Oppositionsführer der Labour Party und wurde von Hamilton als „politisches Monster“ angesehen, weil er eine klare antinukleare Politik bildete.
