Il pittore inglese Bonington viaggiò in Italia per la prima volta nella primavera del 1826. Questo è uno dei primi dipinti che ha prodotto mentre là, il o circa aprile 11. Il suo compagno di viaggio ha scritto che “Siamo a Milano, dove finalmente abbiamo disfatto e messo per usare le nostre scatole di colore. Abbiamo dipinto l'interno della cattedrale, effetto notturno, e penso che se Bonington può produrre i dipinti che ha disegnato la sua reputazione sarà fatto.” Come la vista del Canal Grande, Venezia anche nel Kimbell
