Der englische Maler Bonington reiste erstmals im Frühjahr 1826 nach Italien. Dies ist eines der ersten Gemälde, die er dort produzierte, am oder um 11. April. Sein Reisebegleiter schrieb: „Wir sind in Mailand, wo wir schließlich unsere Farbboxen entpackt und genutzt haben. Wir haben das Innere der Kathedrale gemalt, nächtliche Wirkung, und ich denke, wenn Bonington die Gemälde produzieren kann, die er skizziert hat, wird sein Ruf gemacht werden."
