Obwohl in Nottinghamshire geboren, verbrachte Bonington den größten Teil seiner kurzen Karriere in Frankreich, nachdem sein Vater nach Calais emigrierte. Der Künstler ist heute für seinen Einfluss auf die Entwicklung von Pleinluft (aus Türen) Landschaftsmalerei und als wichtiger Vorläufer des Impressionismus weithin anerkannt. Das Normandie Fischerdorf Trouville-sur-Mer, das Bonington seit Mitte der 1820er Jahre besucht hat, war bei Malern beliebt.
