La Chiesa a Dives sulla costa normanna era un importante santuario per i pellegrini durante la guerra religiosa del XIV secolo. Bonington rimase affascinato dai monumenti medievali e abbozzò una processione religiosa nella chiesa mentre visitava la Normandia tra il 1821 e il 1822. Aveva appena completato la sua formazione artistica a Parigi. Anche se nacque in Inghilterra, Bonington trascorse la maggior parte della sua breve vita in Francia. Le sue viste atmosferiche sui paesaggi e sulle antichità francesi combinano ricchezza con delicatezza. Fu una grande influenza sui pittori britannici di pittoresca vista architettonica.
