Ursprünglich ein Barrister, Roger Fenton studierte Kunst bei Gustave LeGray im Studio von Paul Delaroche in Paris. Er stellte an der Royal Academy 1849-1851 aus. Sein Buch --Fotografen des Krimkriegs, 1855-1856-konsistiert von gekippten Salzdrucken und wurde von Thomas Agnew von Manchester veröffentlicht. Fenton war auch für seine Stilllebens- und Kompositions-Stereographen bekannt. 1853 war Fenton Mitbegründer der Photographischen Gesellschaft von London. Er war auch Mitglied der Bar und der Börse.
