Originariamente un avvocato, Roger Fenton ha studiato arte con Gustave LeGray nello studio di Paul Delaroche a Parigi. Ha esposto alla Royal Academy, 1849-1851. Il suo libro --Fotografie della guerra di Crimea, 1855-1856--consisted di tipped le stampe di sale e fu pubblicato da Thomas Agnew di Manchester. Fenton era anche noto per la sua vita e stereografie di composizione. Nel 1853 Fenton fu cofondatore della Photographic Society di Londra. Fu anche membro del Bar e della Borsa.
