Originally a barrister, Roger Fenton studied art with Gustave LeGray at the studio of Paul Delaroche in Paris. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, 1849-1851. His book --Photographs of the Crimean War, 1855-1856--consisted of tipped salt prints and was published by Thomas Agnew of Manchester. Fenton was also known for his still life and composition stereographs. In 1853, Fenton was a cofounder of the Photographic Society of London. He was also a member of the Bar and the Stock Exchange.
