Esta, la pintura más conocida de Bonheur, muestra el mercado de caballos celebrado en París en el bulevar de l’Hôpital arbolado, cerca del asilo de Salpêtrière, que es visible en el fondo izquierdo. Durante un año y medio Bonheur dibujado allí dos veces a la semana, vestirse como un hombre para desalentar la atención. Bonheur fue bien establecido como pintor de animales cuando la pintura debutó en el Salón de París de 1853, donde recibió un gran elogio. Al llegar al esquema final, la artista se inspiró en George Stubbs, Théodore Gericault, Eugène Delacroix, y la antigua escultura griega: se refirió a la Feria del Caballo como su propio "Parthenon frieze".
