Carriera divenne una celebrità internazionale per i suoi ritratti pastello, portandola a visitare le capitali e i tribunali europei negli anni 1720 e 1730. Ha sede nella sua città natale di Venezia, dove ha prodotto ritratti in particolare di visitatori internazionali. Questa è una delle opere più esuberanti e ben conservate di questo periodo. L'Irishman Gustavus Hamilton visitò Venezia negli inverni del 1730 e del 1731 con il suo amico Edward Walpole, figlio del primo ministro inglese, per assistere alle feste di Carnevale della città. Hamilton indossa il cappello combinato, velo, maschera e mantello corto, noto come bautta, tipico per queste celebrazioni.
