Un seguidor de Nicolas Poussin, cuyo trabajo estudió en Roma, Bourdon fue uno de los principales exponentes del clasicismo en Francia del siglo XVII y miembro fundador de la academia. Esta monumental imagen del Bautismo de Cristo, representada con la característica paleta fresca de Bourdon y el ambiente novato, fue probablemente encargada para una capilla privada. Bourdon fue protestante por nacimiento, y su carrera se formó parcialmente al salir del contexto católico dominante de sus clientes. At times he faced outright religious persecution. En 1652 tomó la posición del pintor de la corte a la reina protestante Christina de Suecia, pero finalmente regresó a París donde dirigió un gran estudio.
