Maharaja Pratap Singh venne al trono nello stato principesco di Jaipur nel 1778 all'età di 14 anni, circa 15 anni prima che questo ritratto fosse dipinto. Era un poeta e patrono delle arti conosciuto per aver commissionato il famoso “Palace dei Venti” a Jaipur. Alla sua corte mantenne un atelier di circa 50 pittori, tra i quali era un maestro musulmano, Sah ib Ram, a cui questo dipinto è attribuito. Pratap Singh era un devoto del dio indù Krishna, e il segno sulla sua fronte testimonia a questa affiliazione. Anche se altamente stilizzato, questo ritratto è riconoscibile come un'immagine di Singh a causa del suo profilo e del caratteristico riccio di capelli alla nuca del suo collo.
