Questo dipinto, mentre mostra il marchio mottled-ink (tarashikomi) tecnica della scuola Rinpa, riflette l'interesse dell'artista nel realismo occidentale-stile, che è combinato con forme sofisticate e graziose. Le foglie intricatemente curling dell'albero e dell'erba evocano il cielo freddo del chiaro giorno di caduta alluso all'iscrizione, che risale lo schermo a fine autunno 1816. Hōitsu è nato in una famiglia samurai ricca e influente e ha avuto tutti i vantaggi della migliore educazione, tra cui l'opportunità di studiare molti degli stili di pittura disponibili per gli artisti in Edo Giappone. Divenne monaco nel 1797 e adottò il nome sacerdotale Monsen Kishin, che appare nel sigillo e nella firma su questo schermo.
