En esta composición estrecha un equilibrio de gorrión sobre una ramita de bambú; los tonos plateados del tallo primario contrastan con la tinta oscura de sus hojas y articulaciones. Sakai Hōitsu es más conocido por su renacimiento del arte del maestro Rinpa-escuela Ogata Kōrin (1658-1716) y por sus pinturas policromas en el estilo Rinpa. También era un maestro de tinta, sin embargo, como indica este trabajo colaborativo animado. Kameda Bōsai, un erudito confuciano, inscribió colofones sobre pinturas de varios artistas importantes de su día, incluyendo Hōitsu y su menor seguidor Suzuki Kiitsu (1799-1858). Aquí, su caligrafía cursiva aparece justo debajo del gorrión perching de Hōitsu.
