Il Frans Hals Museum possiede diverse viste fluviali molto atmosferiche di Salomon van Ruysdael. Il pittore era uno dei molti grandi e minori maestri che si specializzavano in questo genere. Opere come questo ci danno un'immagine affascinante della campagna paludosa piena di fossati, fiumi e laghi che l'Olanda sempre era – e in parte ancora lo è. In questo dipinto, Van Ruysdael unì una chiesa parrocchiale non identificata con una fortificazione, alcuni alberi e varie barche su un grande tratto d'acqua. La scena si concentra sul traghetto in primo piano: bestiame e persone vengono portate dall'altra parte da un traghetto, che tira la sua barca attraverso l'acqua con una lunga corda. Il pittore ha posto la sua firma e una data, 'svruysdael.1664' su questo traghetto. Ci sono dozzine di queste viste sul fiume con traghetto da Van Ruysdael, ma è sempre riuscito a variarle.
