L'artiste Samuel Bell Waugh a peint ce croquis d'huile exceptionnellement vivant du président Grant de la vie en 1869, peut-être avant l'inauguration de Grant comme président parce qu'il porte son uniforme militaire. Arthur Edwin Bye a fait remarquer, "Waugh a interprété Grant à son meilleur, dans des tons chauds, riches, bien mélangés, avec une expression sincère.
