Die Sitter sind die vier Söhne des Lederhändlers Shepherd Knapp (1795–1875) und seiner Frau Catherine Louisa Kumbel (1793–1872). Sie sind von links nach rechts Gideon Lee (1821–1875), Shepherd Fordyce (1832–1886), William Kumbel (1827–1877) und Peter Kumbel (1825–1871). Shepherd Fordyce Knapp scheint nicht älter als zwei zu sein, was die Arbeit bis 1833 oder 1834 Datum. Alle Kinder würden heiraten und Gideon Lee Knapp würde später Eigentümer und Manager der Green Point Ferry werden. Der Porträttyp, unter den komplexesten und erfolgreichsten von Waldo und Jewett gemalt, wird von der englischen Portraitur des achtzehnten Jahrhunderts informiert. Waldo studierte in London zwischen 1806 und 1809 und seine Belichtung mit Porträts von Benjamin West, in dessen Studio er Assistent war, ist offensichtlich.
