I sitter sono i quattro figli del commerciante di cuoio e cuoio Shepherd Knapp (1795-1875) e sua moglie, Catherine Louisa Kumbel (1793-1872). Sono, da sinistra a destra, Gideon Lee (1821-1875), Shepherd Fordyce (1832-1886), William Kumbel (1827-1877), e Peter Kumbel (1825-1871). Shepherd Fordyce Knapp sembra non essere più vecchio di due, che sarebbe data l'opera al 1833 o 1834. Tutti i bambini si sarebbero sposati e Gideon Lee Knapp sarebbe poi diventato il proprietario e direttore del Green Point Ferry. Il tipo di ritratto, tra i più complessi e di successo dipinto da Waldo e Jewishett, è uno informato dalla ritrattistica inglese settecentesca. Waldo studiò a Londra tra il 1806 e il 1809 e la sua esposizione ai ritratti di Benjamin West, nel cui studio era assistente, è evidente.
