Il Re, come un bambino, riccamente vestito, sta cavalcando un grande pony che è riccamente imbrattato. Chiaramente ispirato al ritratto equestre del principe Baltasar Carlos dipinto da Velázquez, fu attribuito anche al grande maestro nel XIX secolo. Il dipinto è piacevole all'occhio e i dettagli e gli accessori sono ben eseguiti, con grande facilità. Tuttavia, la testa e altre parti principali non mostrano la qualità del lavoro di un maestro, e la mancanza di dinamismo del re è evidente. Tutti questi dettagli ci portano a pensare che, senza escludere l'attribuzione a Carreño, è possibile che questo lavoro sia stato svolto da Sebastián Herrera, un pittore di corte anni prima di Carreño de Miranda.
