Artista di notevole struttura e invenzione, Sebastiano Ricci ha raggiunto una reputazione in tutta Europa. Questa Santa Famiglia riflette l'ammirazione di Ricci per l'opera di Ludovico Carracci. Avrebbe avuto un'ampia opportunità di studiare i dipinti di Ludovico quando si trasferì da Venezia a Bologna intorno al 1678. Il trattamento intimo del tema e la figura di San Giuseppe che legge un libro sono degni di nota.
