Una pergamena inscritta con i personaggi per “Hell” avrebbe fatto riflettere gli spettatori sulla loro condotta e la transitoria dei fenomeni mondani. Questo lavoro è un esempio sorprendente della calligrafia individualistica favorita in cerchi Rinzai Zen e tra aesteti di tè. Seigan Sōi, la cui spazzola esplosiva crea l'impressione di una lama che taglia attraverso la carta, era l'abate del tempio di Daitokuji a Kyoto.
