Sergei Vinogradov dipinse Gathering Mushrooms nella foresta in Lettonia dove, avendo deciso di non tornare in Russia sovietica dopo il suo viaggio in America, si stabilì nel 1924. Vinogradov si è rapidamente introdotto nella comunità culturale russa locale, e le proprietà latgalian dei suoi nuovi allievi e amici ospitali sono diventati i suoi soggetti preferiti per dipingere e luoghi per trascorrere il tempo. Qui ha prodotto i suoi famosi paesaggi forestali, ha attirato contadini latgalici in costume nazionale e ha anche prodotto alcune opere sui motivi folcloristici che erano popolari con artisti della sua generazione.
