In questo spettacolo visivo sono presenti oltre una dozzina di varietà di frutta fresca. I miglioramenti del diciannovesimo secolo nelle pratiche di coltivazione e di spedizione hanno permesso l'assortimento stravagante, che comprende un ananas tropicale e meloni fortemente seminati che alludono alla futura taglia della nazione. Un immigrato tedesco, Roesen scappò le rivoluzioni del 1848 per le promesse dell'America. Ha esposto a New York nel 1850, inviando undici dipinti alle mostre della Free Gallery di American Art-Union tra il 1848 e il 1852. Nel 1863 si stabilì in Pennsylvania, dove i suoi patroni includevano moguls dell'industria del legname che rivivevano la percepita inutilità delle risorse americane.
