Nel 1731 il pittore di corte Shen Quan viaggiò a Nagasaki su richiesta del governo giapponese. Durante i suoi quasi due anni in Giappone, Shen e i suoi studenti hanno prodotto un gran numero di dipinti in questo stile, caratterizzati da spazzole d'inchiostro audace per rocce e alberi accoppiate con una meticolosa applicazione di colore per uccelli e fiori, che ha servito come un'ispirazione duratura per gli artisti giapponesi. Questo esempio combina gru, pesche e fungo lingzhi, tutti i simboli di longevità o immortalità, insieme con bambù e rosa cinese (yueji).
